Bates Relates War Experiences
Chas. Bates, secretary of the Central California Mutual Water Assn. and World War II veteran, entertained members of the Rotary Club at their Tuesday noon luncheon with a rambling reminiscence of his personal experiences while in the services.
Bates, who held the rank of Lieut. Colonel in the Army, dwelt primarily with humorous and personal incidents of his service period, both in the States and the Pacific area. On the serious side, Bates mentioned his personal experiences at Manila, where he was with the second attack group to land and begin the drive for another vein, he told of his experiences at the Port of Embarkation, San Francisco, where he was carefully coding out secret messages telling of departure of troops while at the same time photographers, radio announcers and newspaper reporters were heralding such movements publicly.
