Robinson Tells Of Convention Trip
Speaking at the Tuesday noon luncheon meeting of the local Rotary Club, Atty. C. Ray Robinson of Merced gave members of the club an eye-witness account of the recent Republican National Convention in Philadelphia, and his impressions as a member of the California delegation in attendance.
Analyzing the possibilities of the several Republican presidential candidates, Robinson said it was an almost foregone conclusion that Dewey would be the one selected. However, in event there had been a deadlock, Robinson said he believed that Gov. Warren of California would have been selected as the presidential candidate.
Governor Warren, he said, created a highly favorable impression at the convention and was well received wherever he went. As to Warren's acceptance of the vice presidential nomination, after having previously stated he was not interested, Robinson said it was his firm conviction that the final decision was based on Dewey's public statement that the office would assume an increased importance in event he is elected president.
As to the convention as a whole, Robinson said the gathering was harmonious and decidedly enthusiastic. He discounted radio and newspaper reports as to the "smoke filled room" politics and said the rapidly moving events were on an intelligent and honest basis.
As to Philadelphia itself, Robinson said it was the hottest place he had ever visited—including the South Pacific war theater. The temperature was high, the humidity terrific, and the packed crowds in the convention hall suffered considerably from the heat. In this connection Robinson said he was amazed at the important place given television at the convention. The east coast is far ahead of the west in this respect, and television sets are already commonplace throughout a large portion of the east coast area.
