Rotarians See Film On Insect World
Members of the local Rotary Club were privileged Tuesday noon to see an educational film "Our Rival World." Sponsored by Shell Oil Co. it was presented here by Dr. John Sanjean, Shell research entomologist associated with Shell's new chemical laboratories at Modesto.
The film a masterpiece of microscopic reproduction, was recently awarded first place as a documentary film at the Cannes Film Festival. Pointing out that insect-born disease is the cause of more than half of all humans sickness, deformity and death, the film showed, in highly magnified form, close-up shots of the flies, mosquitoes and other insects that are the greatest enemies of the human race; also of locusts, hoppers and similar pests that destroy our foodstuffs and other properties.
John Torre principal of the Los Banos Elementary School, serves as projectionist, and the program was introduced by Rotarian Frank Orr.
The Tuesday luncheon also marked a change in leadership for the club, as President Ed Evans stepped down from office and welcomed in his place the new president, Ned Dickson, manager of the local office of the American Trust Co. Evans will leave within the coming two weeks for San Francisco, where he has been promoted to an executive position at the headquarters office of the Bank of America. William Raznoff, general superintendent for Central California Irrigation District, has been appointed to the Rotary board of directors, filling the vacancy occasioned by the advancement of Dickson to the presidency.
