Rotarians Treated To Exceptional Program
An almost unbelievable program of sound reproduction was presented to members of the Rotary Club Tuesday by Miss Sidney Hedin, of the Pacific Telephone Company's San Francisco office.
Using a tape recorder with twin sound amplifier units, Miss Hedin pointed out that although sound reproduction has been the basis for growing civilization since the beginning of the world, it was not until the mid 1800's, with the introduction of the telephone, phonograph and later the radio, that sound became recognized as an individual field of endeavor.
Recalling that it was Alexander Bell, in 1876 who first proved the human voice could be reproduced the original voice recording; later reproduced recordings of Edison's first talking machine, the first transocean radio broadcasts which were mostly devoid of commercialism.
Climax to the program was her demonstration of new recording techniques with the twin amplifiers that is classified as stereophonic sound, which brings unbelievable realism to the recording, as demonstrated by the reproduction of the passing of a steam railroad train, a jet powered airplane, a recording by the Lawrence Welk orchestra, and even the reproduction of sounds of a rainstorm.
The program was arranged by Leonard Clover, local manager for the telephone company.
