Students Speak At Rotary Luncheon
Last Tuesday, July 29, at the weekly Rotary club meeting Mr. Kenneth Ried, program chairman, stated "Communities are so concerned with the problems of juvenile delinquency that they tend to overlook those teenagers who are being a service to their community and who are striving to better life within the community." An example of such teenagers can be cited by the six high school students who attended the Rotary meeting to speak on democracy and on California.
Six of the twenty-six students in the public speaking course, conducted by Robert Williams offered as a part of summer school program at Los Banos Union High School represented the class at Rotary. One half unit of high school credit is given to each student in the public speaking class. The speech class covers all types of oral communication, including panel discussions, parliamentary procedure radio script, formal debate, dramatics, and dramatic reading.
Speaking on democracy were Diana Gardner, senior; Anne Kaljian, sophomore, Irene Biel, sophomore, LaVerne Rosa, senior, Melinda Cardoza, sophomore, and Nicola LaSalvia, sophomore, spoke on California. Williams felt that speaking before the Rotary was an excellent opportunity for the students to talk before a group.
