Langston
Is Speaker At Rotary Luncheon
Highway
Patrolman Wayne Langston of Merced, spoke to members of the Rotary Club Tuesday
noon relative to the increasing rate of traffic accidents in this county, particularly
accidents involving school children. He called attention to the regulation requiring
motorist to bring their vehicle to a complete stop before passing school buses
stopped along the highway to receive or discharge passengers, and said that all
members of the Highway Patrol were waging a continuous enforcement program in
this respect.
There have already been two such accidents in the county
this year, one in which a six-year-old child was instantly killed and the other
resulting in serious injury.
Langston, who is in charge of school bus
inspection in the county, told of the constant inspection that is maintained to
insure mechanical safety of the buses, and said that school buses in California
are among the nation’s best from a mechanical standpoint.
But
mechanical perfection of the school bus isn’t the complete answer, Langston
emphasized, as he pointed out that the average youngster isn’t aware or
afraid of the danger that lurks along the highway. As a consequence, all motorists
must exercise extreme caution while driving in areas where there are children.
