Los Banos native Paul Loeffler, now a sportscaster with channel
47 in Fresno, was the guest speaker at Tuesday’s Rotary meeting. Loeffler
entertained the audience, which included his wife Tanya, and mother, Linda, with
stories of what it is like to work in sports broadcasting and a brief history
of how he got to where he is today.
A 1994 graduate of Los Banos High
School, Loeffler attended Syracuse University because “that’s where
all the great broadcasters went.” According to Loeffler his goal was always
to be a play-by-play announcer. Although he has mainly worked as a sportscaster,
he has also covered other news events from a murder to computerized golf carts
in Chowchilla since joining Channel 47. He added that he is on the air anywhere
from two to seven minutes a day but is takes eight hours to do this since he does
his own research, copy writing and editing prior to going on the air.
Loeffler said he felt blessed to be working in Fresno since it is so close to
his mom and grandparents who still live in Los Banos. He said he loves it when
he runs into people from Los Banos who say they hate sports but they like the
rhymes he does. He said Los Banos gave him a unique perspective once he left and
began experiencing big city life and he still thinks Los Banos is the greatest
town and he is an ambassador for the community everywhere he goes.
For
now he still has a few more years on his contract with Channel 47. He may go to
the Bay Area, look at a network job or ESPN but ultimately, “I’ll
keep doing what I'm doing and follow the path God has put before me.”
