M. Smith Tells of
Rotary Convention
Max Smith, superintendent of
the Merced Elementary School and delegate to the recent Rotary Club International
convention at Havana, Cuba, was a guest at the Los Banos Rotary Club’s luncheon
Tuesday noon. He gave an interesting account of the convention and his impressions
of the convention city.
Due to the European war the convention had the
smallest attendance in many years, only 3,800 delegates being present. For instance,
the usual large delegation from England was cut down to a single representative.
Mr. Smith traveled down the Atlantic coast and on the causeway to Key West,
which he said was a disappointment to him. He spoke glowingly of the beauty of
the Havana harbor and Cuban mainland, described to the characteristics and habits
of the four million inhabitants, and told of interesting places he visited while
there. The narrow streets particularly impressed him, as did the movement of traffic,
and apparent lack of traffic regulations.
