Tiger Grid Squad
Feted at Dinner
All members of the Los Banos high
school football squad were honored at a dinner given them by the local Rotary
Club at the D.E.S. dining hall Saturday evening. Members of the Lions and 20-30
Clubs also participated in the commemorative program.
Rotary President
Bert Loosmore presided and introduced Lions Club president Sam Spina, acting 20-30
Club president Rocco Pernetti, and other guests. Chas. W. Bates, as program chairman
presided as toastmaster at the program which followed the spaghetti and roast
beef dinner.
Guest speaker of the evening was Ken Niles, radio announcer
of Los Angeles. Directing his words primarily to the football team, Niles stressed
the importance of good sportsmanship and of doing one’s part to the best
of his ability. Later in the evening Niles showed several reels of personal hunting
and fishing trips, including several jaunts into the famed South Dakota pheasant
country.
High school coach Carlyle Loftin spoke briefly on the team’s
experiences over the past season. Paying tribute to his team, Loftin complimented
their good sportsmanship and willingness to work, and said he had no expressed
his appreciation to assistant coaches Sam Benidettino and Al Visconti for their
hard work and loyalty through the season; and commended team captain P. Montemurro
for the excellent leadership and judgment displayed through the year.
The graduating members of the football squad were presented with gold football
trophies by President Loosmore on behalf of the Rotary, as has been the custom
for a number of years. Recipients included Captain Paul Montemurro, Ernest Scott
Jr., Frank DeParsia, Ray Grove, Dominic Falasco Jr., John Pugliese, Donald Prien,
Tony Tieso, Nick Torlano, Dominic Carlucci, Donald Gale, Delphino Ledesma, John
Arambel and Frank Palazzo Jr.
